American Red Cross Lifeguarding Certification
Learn how to effectively prevent and respond to water emergencies. The American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification is key when pursuing a Lifeguard position. Our experienced staff will ensure you get the most of your training. The course is spread over multiple days and includes testing of hands-on skills, as well as comprehension on written exams.
Prerequisities
- American Red Cross lifeguarding students must be at least 15 years old by the last day of class.
- Students must also pass a pre-course swimming skills test prior to taking our courses:
- Jump in, submerge, resurface and swim 150 yards using front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not permitted. Swim goggles are allowed.
- Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
- Swim 50 yards using front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.
- Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
- Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.
- Surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
- Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point, holding the object at the surface with both hands and keeping the face at or near the surface.
- Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
To successfully complete the course and receive certification, you must:
- Attend the entire course and participate in all class sessions
- Actively participate in all course activities
- Demonstrate proficiency in all skills
- Pass the final written exam with a minimum grade of 80%
- Pass the final skill assessments
Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive a certification for Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid that is valid for 2 years.
